Choosing a coffee roast can be a difficult decision when trying to find something similar to what you’ve enjoyed elsewhere. While artisan roasters will have relatively similar roast levels, in-store coffee brands and national coffee shops will have a darker roast than what you might get at an artisan roaster. Here are some guidelines in deciding what roast you might enjoy.
The Dominican has a unique climate that is actually close to Jamaica, with nearly-ideal conditions for growing high-quality, flavourful coffee. This tropical paradise has some of the best-developed beans in the world, with rich soil, proper sunlight and cross-winds that nourish the coffee trees. All this means the beans develop lots of flavour.
Canadians are becoming more conscientious of social and health issues as time comes on, and this Fair Trade Certified ensures that the farmer is being better compensated than typical commodity coffee, and the Organic certification ensures that the coffee has less unhealthy pesticides and herbicides. All this makes for a delicious cup of coffee, better than what you would find at most cafes in Canada.

Brazilian Coffees have a reputation for being a lower quality Arabica bean, but over the past decade (or so) the country as a whole has improved their crops and cultivation, and created a rather good coffee bean. Combined with the huge volume being exported, Brazil coffee beans are some of the least expensive on the market. The price combined with the recently improved flavour makes it a great daily drinker.
Brazil coffee beans are an all-around bean – not too strong on any quality, with a mild body and a pleasant aroma.

Hazelnut is one of the top flavoured coffee options – something about nuts and coffee just go so well together. This becomes particularly apparent around the holiday season (fall and winter), when the temperatures drop and we seek something to warm us up both physically and mentally. Halzenut has a creamy, warming attribute to it that’s ideal for perking you up on a chilly day.
How do you go about flavouring coffee with Hazelnut though? There are a couple options:
- If you love the taste of hazelnut and can drink it all day, pre-infused hazelnut coffee is a simple choice
- If you enjoy hazelnut but still want some variety, hazelnut flavoured syrups are a great way to add the flavour only when you want it
- If convenience is your ultimate concern and you have a Keurig machine, k-cups give you a number of options for hazelnut flavoured coffee

Cold brewed coffee has picked up in popular this year because of hte low acidity and full flavour it offers, without the heat that makes people sweat on hot summer days. Here are a few simple steps for a delicious, convenient, cold brewed coffee.
- Grind the beans for a drip coffee, the grinds should be just about 1mm in size.
- Add coffee to your 1L whipping siphon with 3 charges, then gently swirl the coffee siphon in an upright position. Make sure not to shake it however, so that grounds don’t become stuck.
- Place the siphon in the fridge for at least 2 hours to allow for extraction.
- While holding it upright, slowly release pressure from the siphon by depressing the lever. Unscrew the lid and pour into a coffee filter to catch the grounds.
- Dilute the drink with milk and sugar as desired, or drink straight. Refrigerate unused portion.
This coffee should be concentrated enough that you can get multiple cups from it. Roughly 100g of coffee beans should be used per 500mL that will make about 400mL brew.
Despite an expired patent on their k-cups (and a slew of new competitors), Green Mountain’s earnings are expected to be up this year. With 3rd quarter revenue estimated at $0.77/share, earnings are up from $0.52/share last year. Total revenue for the year is marked at $4.35 Billion, with $981.9 Million coming from this quarter.
While growth has been strong over the past 2 years, many were expecting a decline. Analysts are seeing the company as a buy however, when comparing it with their competitors and their earnings. Their new lines with renewed patents could play an integral role in maintaining the profitability of the company.
